Detailing
Empire Iron Works Ltd. has a full service drafting office that provides our branches with a diverse and comprehensive menu of services extending far beyond traditional paper drawings.
We have adopted Tekla Structures solid modeling software to model, draw and track our work. Models can incorporate, concrete, wood, glass, mechanical components and equipment that interact and may interfere with the steel structure. This ensures that we provide accurate and complete information to all members of the construction team.
The software is used to detail all of our industrial, institutional, and commercial projects from small to large and simple to complex. Tekla Structures is used to collaborate with architects, engineers and contractors to verify, expand and provide information to use for review, approval and integration with other trades. We can export files in numerous formats to allow our clients to import the information into their own software to generate a true Building Information Management (BIM) collaboration.
Our staff is constantly being challenged to improve all aspects of their work through assignments, meetings, discussions, and on the job training. The staff does a thorough review of all contract drawings to identify any potential problems and then actively work to provide solutions that can be incorporated in the detailing office instead of on the shop floor or the job site. We also look at “what if” solutions to develop alternates and to make proposals that will save time, material and money. They work closely with our purchasers, project managers, shop and field staff to ensure timely and accurate data and reports. The information is then transmitted electronically in CNC, DXF and Fabtrol formats to allow the use of automated production equipment.
Another dimension to our software is the ability to visually track the progress of all parts in the structures. It starts in the drawing office by tracking detailing, approvals, and shop issues. Drawings migrate along the visual model until nothing is left to detail. The data is then used to track fabrication and erection progress. Our erectors can plan erection sequences, prepare load lists and track erection progress. The calculation of member weights and centers of gravity is easily accomplished to aid in rigging studies for the critical lifts. The crane placement, lift radii, false-work locations and sequencing can be incorporated in the model to ensure the erection will go smoothly. The end result is a full visual history of the project progress.
In addition to the uses already outlined we also use Tekla Structures to do material take-offs, prepare estimates, prototype connections, provide web viewers and other visualization aids to our customers. The contributions that our drafting office makes using our modeling software are limited only by our imagination in developing new processes.
